Type Hike

Creative Direction, Exhibit Coordination, & Design
Self-Initiated, 2016-2020

Created by David Rygiol and James Walker in 2016 to celebrate the NPS Centennial, Type Hike is a collaborative nonprofit design project that celebrates and supports the outdoors through typographic-focused posters. Designers were invited to contribute in their own typographic voice, creating a contemporary collection of 150+ posters, which were then sold with 100% of proceeds benefitting our charitable partners.

The project began with National Parks (NPS100), expanding to include National Seashores & Recreation Areas (SHORES), endangered animals (ALPHABEAST), Mars (MARS), and the Gateway Arch (ARCH).

In addition to posters, the project self-published (3) books, exhibited across the country including the Type Directors Club and Chicago Design Museum, partnered with NASA sending kids to space camp, collaborated with REI and Topo Designs, and provided opportunities for talks at TypeCon 2018, PechaKucha Austin #29, Art Centere, AIGA Louisville, and several additional universities.
